What Happens After Elections

Announcement of Results

The IEBC announces results progressively. County and constituency results are declared at the respective tallying centres. Presidential results are announced by the IEBC Chairperson at the national tallying centre in Nairobi after verification.

Petitions

Presidential election results can be challenged at the Supreme Court within 7 days. Other positions (Governor, MP, MCA, etc.) can be challenged at the High Court. Petitions must be filed within 28 days of the declaration.

Swearing-In

Once results are final (after any petitions are concluded), elected leaders are sworn in. The President is sworn in on the date set in the Constitution. Governors, MPs, MCAs, and other leaders assume office according to the electoral laws.

Your Role Continues

Hold your leaders accountable. Attend public participation forums, ask questions, and follow up on campaign promises. Democracy does not end on election day.
